The Brain’s Gain

Dementia Prevention programs

Brain’s Gain lectures and workshops share insights and tips from the field of medicine and neuroscience on ways to maximize brain function and build cognitive reserve.  The Brain’s Gain Workout offers cognitive stimulation and weekly exercises that challenge the brain globally.

The brain begins to shrink and lose efficiency in our 20’s and 30’s.  While the brain shrinks, paradoxically, it also has the capacity to grow denser.  This growth in density is referred to as cognitive reserve.  Cognitive reserve is believed to buffer the brain from insult or injury and is thought to result from both physical health and mental stimulation.

With the prospect of living longer, it’s important to know that dementia is not inevitable.  Dementia is a cluster of symptoms caused by a disorder or disease - Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia.

Experts believe cognitive reserve can keep us mentally sharp as we age.  In some cases, individuals with cognitive reserve did not manifest the symptoms of dementia even though their brains had the characteristic plaques and tangles of Alzheimer’s disease.
